Commonly Asked Questions

The Dental Aptitude Test is an admission requirement for most Canadian and U.S. dental schools. The DAT has two different versions authored by either the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) or the American Dental Association (ADA). At DATprep.ca we prepare you for the Canadian DAT and its four compulsory sections.

Standardized DAT scores are sent to dental schools selected by you. Scores are often used by dental schools alongside grade-point average, interview results, and references to determine eligibility for admission. The Canadian DAT consists of 210 multiple choice questions.

Originally, the DAT was written on paper twice a year: in November and February. Now it will take place electronically every month at testing centers throughout Canada and the United States.

This information is subject to change, for the latest updates please view the CDA DAT webpage

Difference # 1: Different sections:

Canadian DAT Sections

Component Number of Questions Time Allotted
Survey of Natural Sciences (SNS) 70 questions (1-40 Biology, 41-70 General Chemistry) 90 minutes
Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) 90 questions* 60 minutes
Reading Comprehension Test (RCT) 50 questions 50 minutes
Manual Dexterity (MDT) N/A (temporarily suspended) 30 minutes

* Fifteen (15) questions on the Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) will not be given a score.

American DAT Sections

Component Number of Questions Time Allotted
Survey of Natural Sciences (SNS) 100 questions (Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry) 90 minutes
Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) 90 questions 60 minutes
Reading Comprehension Test (RCT) 50 questions 60 minutes
Quantitative Reasoning 45 Questions 45 minutes

Difference # 2: Biology Topics: Both the Canadian DAT and American DATs cover similar topics with some differences. For one, the Canadian DAT includes topics of ecosystems and cladistics. The American DAT’s Biology section contains the following topics which are not on the Canadian DAT: experimental cell biology and biomolecules.

Difference # 3: Reading Comprehension: The Canadian DAT’s Reading Comprehension section has a total of 50 questions which have an allotted time of 50 minutes, whereas the American DAT’s Reading Comprehension section has a total of 50 questions in 60 minutes.

The MDT is an optional section of the DAT which involves carving soap to precise specifications.

The MDT is suspended at this time due to COVID-19. The MDT is pending reinstatement, please view the CDA website for the latest information.

Yes! Datprep has updated all of our biology test materials for the new 2022 DAT Bio Changes. We've added and updated material in our practice tests, qbanks, and bio videos. You can read more about the exact changes and the updates we made in our 2022 DAT Bio Test Updates post here.

There are many good resources to study for the Datprep, but I think Datprep stands out in 3 ways:
  1. Our practice tests are the most representative of the real DAT. Bootcamp’s practice tests are famous for being uncannily representative of the real DAT. We update our tests weekly to stay current with the DAT year-round. Our practice tests also feature Prometric Mode, which simulates the exact same test interface you’ll see in the Prometric test center.
  2. Our video lessons are top-notch. We focus on the high-yield concepts that come up repeatedly on the DAT, and teach them in an easy to understand way. Our chemistry professor, Dr. Mike, has the best set of DAT videos to teach you everything you need and nothing you don’t.
  3. We have more study materials than anyone else. Bootcamp has more practice questions, tests, and videos than anyone else. This includes videos for every biology topic on the DAT, and our famous Bio Bites qbanks that make learning bio easy.
The combination of these 3 features makes DAT Bootcamp the best all-in-one study tool to ace the DAT. You can read student reviews of DAT Bootcamp here.

Absolutely. Every year we help thousands of students get sky-high scores and get accepted into dental school. There’s a reason over 90% of pre-dental students use Datprep every year, it’s because our students get exceptionally high scores. You can read their stories on this page.

Having been students ourselves, we priced DAT Bootcamp to be affordable. Check out our pricing at this link.

Why do we charge for this resource? Tutors, engineers, and video editors cost a lot. I want this to be the best place to ace the DAT, and to do that we need to compensate people for their time.

If you need financial help, please send me a message and I’ll help you. I want to empower all students to ace the DAT, regardless of economic privilege.
